Diversity and Inclusiveness- Part 3

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

I have a question, one that should not be asked. Here it is: what is your color?

Now that is a tricky question...You see if you believe (just like myself) that color, shape, and size are just god's and/or nature's ways of showing off, then your color is a sign of beauty, diversity, and inclusiveness. It is one of the ways to celebrate humanity at its greatest.

Racism on the other hand, has a way of taking all three (color, shape, and size) and using it to divide rather than unite. Yet from my experience, the lack of inclusiveness does not necessarily originate from racism alone nor originates from it automatically. Allow me to explain, Americans tend to be overly traditional. When traditions do not keep up with society, advancements, and time, they can become the basis for the lack of inclusiveness.

Looking for a book to make you hap'BEE? Look no further. BEE’loved by many, the honey bee is super sweet. In this educational book for children ages 6-8 you’ll have fun learning all about the lives of honey bees. You’ll discover how long they live, what they eat, the many different roles that bees play during their life, and more! This book would be great for a classroom setting in which children are learning about insects and nature or for children at home who have an interest in bees.

The example that comes first to mind, has puzzled me for quite a while now. Do we say "African - American" because we are taking a dividing and excluding approach where the person is first alienated by emphasizing them being African first, and only then American OR

Does it originate from the will and need to celebrate diversity first and only then being American?.

While I wish it wasn't so, it would be very difficult to convince me that the first explanation is not the truth. In other words, I unfortunately believe is originates from racism and the lack of inclusiveness. Unfortunately and even naturally to a certain extent, our thinking (especially Limbic thinking) focuses on patterns and what does not fit the pattern, as a defense mechanism. I call it the socio-genetic gap.

While society has in theory advanced quite a bit, our brain and genes still think and operate as if we are in the jungle (this is Limbic thinking 101). The brain uses established patterns to identify possible dangers. The rule is simple, if you do not fit the pattern, you might be a threat. Yes, yes, I know we are supposed to be far better than that by now, yet try telling it to the brain!

Let's connect the dots for you. Traditions just like patterns, tend to have a certain extent of fixation to them. It is the "sticking" to the pattern and/or tradition that is supposed to serve you well. Yet, if these patterns and traditions are not adapted and advanced, it may result in lack if inclusiveness and racism. it might sound funny to you, but for the life of me, I cannot get why every state in the United States has to have it own drivers license.

I get the financial part of it. It generates money. I get it. It is okay for the state to want and need income resources. Yet why not have every resident that wants to drive pay an annual fee that includes their driver's license, and leave us alone with having to go through a bunch of non-sense every time we move to another state. The problem is that even trying to discuss how uncomfortable having 50 states, each with its own crazy is exactly like telling an American not think like an American. It is obviously inefficient, a waste of time, idiotic to the core, yet important as an American tradition...it is part of the American Way.

These traditions are often fossilized because of a handful of other traditions that have and still make America a super power and a good place to live in, despite everything. Another example is healthcare profession related licensure between states. How stupid is it to demand from a nurse to get relicensed for another state, even if she has 20 years of experience. Do organs shift their location between New York and Los Angeles? Is blood pressure measured differently suddenly?

The answer is of course not. But it is a way to say "welcome to our state, show us the money!". It is the basics of capitalism. My suggestion is, take the money, but leave us alone...leave the poor nurse alone!

I know...I know...I am suggesting something completely "un-American". Tradition and one of Americans' greatest fear is the "take over" of the federal government. I think there is confusion between the government over controlling the civilians' life, and traditions that do not make sense anymore, make it hared to be an American, and wastes our time mostly for the same result anyhow.
