To have your green card application approved, you must meet the eligibility criteria for at least one of the eight green card categories approved by the United States and supervised by USCIS. Applying for a green card as a Special Immigrant means you meet circumstances that the United States has deemed as unique or special. These fall under five main sub-categories that include a religious worker, a special immigrant juvenile, Afghanistan or Iraq national, international broadcaster, and an employee of an international organization or family member or NATO-6 employee or family member. Accordingly, you would have to meet one of the following criteria:
Be a member of a religious denomination coming to the U.S. to work for a nonprofit religious organization
Be a juvenile who needs the protection of a juvenile court because you have been abused, abandoned or neglected by a parent
Were an Afghan or Iraqi translator or interpreter for the U.S. government
Were an Iraqi employed by or for the U.S. government in Iraq on or after March 20, 2003, for at least one year; or
Were an Afghan employed by the U.S. government or International Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
You are coming to work in the U.S. as a member of the media for the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) or a USAGM grantee
You are a retired officer or employee of an eligible international organization or NATO, or are an eligible family member of such an employee.
